Glanusk raise vital funds for Noah’s Ark
The Brecon Beacons bore silent witness to the efforts of a parent to raise much needed funds for the Children’s Hospital of Wales whose official charity the ‘Noah’s Ark Appeal’ reaches out to gain hope and support for children who need specialist help.
This appeal is to provide the Children’s Hospital of Wales with a £7m MRI scanner which will assist Consultants and Doctors to make key decisions for future generations of children that need our support.
One mother had the opportunity to play a key role to raise funds and her honest, brave and inspiring efforts paid homage to the many families that have been touched by a child that needs medical intervention to sustain life.
It was a heart warming thing to see this 42 year old mother streaming across the parklands of Glanusk on the brave horse Merlin who bore her safely over 19 obstacles, standing at an awesome height of just under 1m high and even more in width . Iona Legge-Bourke took the challenge of the BE 90 competition after a period of over 25 years away from the saddle! Having never jumped before in her life, she learnt it all for this event. With little experience from the start, this was a challenge that had never been done before in any BE event. We ensured she was kitted out in the best safety that is on offer with the Racesafe body protector and the Point 2 Air Jacket on top to ensure she had the best chance if she sustained a bad fall! Her pony, Merlin, was lent to her by Milo Herbert who was waiting in the wings at school to hear that both had made it round safely.
Iona and husband Harry, are patrons of the Glanusk International Horse Trials and she soon spotted an opportunity to raise awareness of the Noah’s Ark Appeal for the Children’s Hospital of Wales who had given the gift of life to their daughter Serena who had been so desperately ill for her first six months. It is thanks to the Children’s Hospital of Wales that Serena now enjoys a normal happy childhood and her parents are always aware of other parents that will need this help in the future.
Back to the event, Iona trained relentlessly to ensure she completed the challenge that she had set herself and when she took off from the Start Box her heart was thumping. Family, supporters and spectators who donated on line for this fundraiser were there to show their support for this worthwhile cause. On board Merlin, a 15hh grey, Iona set off at a pace to take on the challenge on behalf of the Noah’s Ark Appeal and they galloped over the course with the support of many. She completed the cross country, show jumping and dressage on Sunday 3rd July 2011 to the amazement of many who realised this was a huge achievement.
Please think about joining us and donating to the Iona Challenge, we and the charity will be forever grateful.
