Morgan ton helps put England Lions in control against Sri Lanka
Eoin Morgan put himself in the driving seat to replace Paul Collingwood in the England Test team by scoring 156 not out for the England Lions on the first day of their tour match with Sri Lanka at Derby on Thursday.
The left-handed Middlesex middle-order batsman put on an unbeaten 232 for the fifth wicket with Samit Patel, who was 101 not out at the close, as the home side reached an imposing 394 for four.
Meanwhile, Morgan’s chief rival for the No 6 berth, Essex batsman Ravinder Bopara, could only manage 17 ahead of the first Test of the summer next Thursday at Sophia Gardens.
And, at the end of play Morgan said he was delighted with how well he had played in what was his first innings of the new season since returning from the Indian Premier League (IPL).
