“If he runs at me I’ll give him everything I’ve got,” says Lawes, of his head-to-head with Deacon, the vaunted ‘enforcer’ of the Leicester pack.
“I am feeling fresh and ready to go and get around and make some big hits. I could not think of anything worse if we did not win something this season after the way we’ve played. I will do whatever I can to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Yes, you might just say Lawes is up for this one.
Aside from fierceness of the age-old rivalry between the two celebrated East Midlands clubs and the prize on offer of a place in the Premiership final at Twickenham on May 28, Lawes’s extra motivation stems from the painful memory of his last trip to Welford Road.
The Premiership encounter on Jan 8 not only ended in a 27-16 victory for Leicester but also resulted in Lawes retiring after just 10 minutes with a knee injury that would rule him out of England’s Six Nations campaign.
